How do I keep my jewelry looking brand new? This is a question my customers ask me at every single trunk show.
I know the traditional way to store jewelry is to keep it in the beautiful jewelry box passed down to you through the generations. Here is a mix of advice from me and from a great article in the latest People Style Watch and it is advice that I would love to forward onto you.
Store each piece separately
Don't shoot the messenger but gemstones can scratch silver and gold, and chains can tangle. Try putting each item in its own silk or cotton pouch. You can also be a little less fancy and store individual pieces in a ziploc bag. If it's good enough for Tiffany's then it's good enough for me!
Clean it Carefully
Gently scrub gemstones with a toothbrush, using mild soap and water. Lightly buff metals with a polishing cloth. I really love to use a fabulous product called Haggerty's which I found at a bargain from Winners. This product is located with the kitchen utensils as this is the traditional use. For only $6 you can buy this polishing cloth to keep your important pieces of all metal types and gemstones clean.
Last on, First off!
Ladies, it just doesn't matter if it's gold and diamonds, it won't look it's best over time if you're wearing your pieces in the shower/hot tub/pool, etc on a regular basis. Your jewels should be the last items you put on in the morning after you've moisturized, sprayed your hairspray, and accented your natural scent with perfume. These things alone are enough to change your personal chemical makeup and can be damaging to your jewels. Now I'm not suggesting that you go scent free/peanut free/shell fish free like our local elementary school, just be mindful and take care of your pretty bling.
Traveling?
This has become my favourite bag to store my jewels while I'm traveling, and a few extras when necessary. I NEED this bag when I'm on the move because really, a girl needs options and I never know what mood I'll be in that day. For $98 this bag has all the compartments for statement necklace, chunky bracelets, ring rolls, and delicate earrings that you could ever need. Love, love, love!
Need More Advice on how to Display and Store your Jewels?
I found this cute video on You Tube with some creative ideas to keep your jewels in check. Another great resource is Winners. I have purchased some of the great earring and necklace trees that many of you have asked me about for less than $10. I also love some of the funky bust forms that they have in store. Great on top of your dresser and creates some quirky interest in your boudoir!
Happy Sorting!!
Best, Stacy
